Watch the World Cup in 2022 Using a VPN

Now because it’s the biggest football tournament on the planet, it’s unlikely you’ll ever get stuck somewhere without access to the World Cup. However, that’s not always quite the same. If you’ve ever tried watching a football game with a foreign commentary it can be quite distracting. Turning down the volume isn’t always an option either especially if you’re watching in somewhere like a Spanish bar or Greek Taverna!
In truth most of us want to watch huge football tournaments like World Cup 2022 in a language we understand, plus commentators we’re familiar with. For the United Kingdom that means people like Johnathan Pierce and Kevin Kilbane commentating with pundits like Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker for analysis. The BBC has to be the best choice as it’s one of the few places you can watch without adverts being crammed in at half time and at every break. Although ITVX has shown some restraint as the UK’s other World Cup broadcaster.

Unfortunately, although all the matches are streamed live on the BBC and ITV web sites, plus archived away for 30 days or so – all is normally blocked for anyone outside the UK. When you connect to the BBC website for example, if you’re coming with a non-British IP address you get quietly funnelled onto the international version of the site (which has no live video, TV or radio on it). Even if you force your browser onto the UK BBC iPlayer site, you’ll just get blocked when you try and access.

However, fear not although technically you can’t watch any of the UK World Cup coverage – that didn’t stop over three million people watch England’s first match from abroad!  So how did they do it?  Well, it’s quite simple and you can see how in the following video.   It’s a simple process and one that thousands of people have been using to watch BBC iPlayer from Ireland for many years too.

That’s all there is to it. By routing your internet connection through a VPN based in the UK, you are then effectively in the UK. Every UK channel will be available including BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5. Indeed if you sign on to Netflix, you’ll get the UK version, and your Sky account will work too if you have a valid subscription.
